Essay Writing

Essay Writing This will help you know what to write and have enough content. The reader will be interested to keep on reading if you have organized your ideas systematically. Many students end the review process at this point. If your instructor has specific requirements for the format of writing assignments, check them before submitting your essay. As instructors, we also have to give up some control over our assignments. For a truly student-centered process to work, we can’t ask leading questions or make decisions for our students. Giving students the reading, writing and thinking skills required for a process like this is, to put it mildly, challenging -- for students and instructors alike. We’re asking students to give up certainties and formulae, to dive into the unknown. Let your ideas flow smoothly from one to another. That’s what you should ask when writing a narrative essay. Most college students turn their attention to the letter grade or percentage score. Based on your thesis, continue doing research, now with a focus on sources that support the thesis statement you have developed. Sites like JSTOR and Google Scholar are great places to find academic sources. Make sure that the sources you find support and develop your thesis statement. This part could take anywhere from hours to days. Background research is vital for the formulation of your thesis. Through background research, you can make connections between sources and discern which sources are most valuable to your topic. Ensure even a lower grade child can easily read your essay. Remove word or phrases that do not introduce any new idea to your essay. As you aim to be precise, be careful not to lose the purpose or the flow of your essay. Do not lose your reader by having a disorganized essay. Our additional services are designed to boost your paper's quality. You can choose one or several additional services on the order form. Don’t know how to avoid plagiarism when paraphrasing? Get to the point without being too wordy and adding too much unnecessary information. We’re taking away the safety of falling back on generalizations, personal experience and conventional wisdom. Make sure you look for any spelling or grammar errors that you might have missed while writing. Before you start writing, take a minute to organize your thoughts. Write down important points that you want to make in your essay. If you can’t, either move on and try to come back later or just cut your losses, conclude that point and move on. Follow Essay Format Guide From Experienced Teacher

Follow Essay Format Guide From Experienced Teacher At last, you should always proofread your essay. It is to check for any grammatical or other logical errors. You have to make sure what the question wants you to write. Students sometimes in a hurry fail to understand the topic and end up writing on something else. The three paragraphs in the body part should support the thesis statement. As for the conclusion part, it should not only sum up the argument, but it should also lift up the idea presented in the essay. Ideas which you will present in the essay should be logical, and there should be an easy flow. It is crucial to write down the information in a compact manner. Essays might be used as arguments, favour or criticism, daily life-based observations, etc. Formal essays deal with topics related to serious purposes, dignity, organization, etc. However, keep in mind that all the paragraphs in the body of the short essay should be logically connected, thus use transitions for smooth flow of the text. A passionate essay writer always wants to add multiple arguments in his/her essay. Introduction and conclusion should not be more than one paragraph, and the body can be about 3 paragraphs. Essays can be written long, fully expressing your thoughts on a topic. But, when it comes to writing down a short essay, you need to be very clear with your points. You can’t write well without understanding the structure of a paragraph. I see so many students try to squeeze a number of different ideas into a single paragraph and this immediately tells me they don’t understand what it’s for and how it’s used. But in a short essay, you have to control yourself. Only put useful arguments and weed out irrelevant ones. But, be alert, never remove the most convincing points or else your essay will lose its purpose. The first thing before you initiate the writing process is reading. You can underline important information or encircle the main question. Your introduction should build up the interest of the audience, and it should be clear that what is the topic. The main parts that build up a short essay are introduction, body and a conclusion. Argumentative - These type of essays, also known as persuasive essays, make a specific claim about a topic and then provide evidence and arguments to support the claim. The claim set forth in argumentative essays may be an opinion, an evaluation, an interpretation, cause-effect statement or a policy proposal. The purpose of argumentative essays is to convince or persuade the reader that a claim is valid. Yet, the major part that the essay revolves around is the body, which should open all the facts, arguments, supporting evidence, and viewpoints on the subject. All information needs to be appropriately and coherently listed so that readers could enjoy smooth reading and actually understand your claims. Also, get rid of those topics that are too challenging or that you're just not that interested in. Pretty soon you will have whittled your list down to just a few topics and then you can make a final choice.

How To Write An Example Essay

How To Write An Example Essay This will make your paper longer and is more appropriate for academic writing. Your conclusion should always begin by restating your thesis statement. Don’t start with the introduction. The introduction is where some students struggle the most, so to avoid getting bogged down, create the introduction later. This will allow you to fully form your thoughts and ideas and come back and integrate the main ideas into your introduction. The most important step in writing an essay or research paper is to fully comprehend the essay question. This is your chance to tie all of your main points together and go out with a bang. A good conclusion will address the main arguments of each body paragraph in a succinct way and thoroughly prove your thesis statement. Take your time and organize the information you have in a logical narration based on the outline. Take out all conjunctions (aren’t, don’t, couldn’t, etc.). In sum, the student essay falls into the same genre as the essays we ourselves write. Although all of those arguments have merit, our own thinking on the subject is both more old-fashioned and more radical. An essay can be wonderfully articulated and thought out, but will still result in a poor grade if it doesn’t adequately answer the prompt provided. In any case, the essay ends somewhere different from where it began. The reader has learned something, precisely because the author has. We think the essay form is still the best way for students to think hard on the page -- but we are not fans of formulae. Instead, we’re in favor of inquiry-based learning, evidence-rich analysis and process work. Point â€" Present the main point of your paragraph. This will obviously vary in length, depending on the allocated word count of your essay, but should take between one and four sentences to introduce. Organizing your essay means identifying the separate functions of each paragraph and understanding how each function fits into the essay overall. Each paragraph should have a separate purpose, just as each sentence has a separate function. The importance of this is already implied by the transition sentenceâ€"an essay with a logical progression will make transitioning between ideas relatively simple. A transition sentence can conclude a paragraph in a number of ways. It can summarize the paragraph, connect the paragraph back to the thesis, or indicate how the next paragraph will follow. You may need to do further research before sitting down to write the first draft. Practice timed essay writing with sample test questions before test day. With a little practice, you may not feel as pressured by the clock on test day. If your essay is too long, you may run the risk of losing track of the question that you should be answering. A few well-written and organized paragraphs that answer the question and showcase your command of language may score better than pages and pages of writing. If you want to write better essays, you will need to understand the criteria teachers use to score them. At this stage of essay writing, focus primarily on the content. Examples of scholarly sources include academic journals, peer-reviewed articles, textbooks, books by accredited authors, and NPR articles. Examples of unacceptable scholarly sources are magazine articles, open forum submissions, encyclopedia entries, and unverified online sources. Six Different Types Of Essays By Nathan Fredericks

Six Different Types Of Essays By Nathan Fredericks Revising involves rethinking your ideas, refining your arguments, reorganizing paragraphs, and rewording sentences. You may need to develop your ideas in more detail, give more evidence to support your claims, or delete material that is unnecessary. For more advice on revising and a sample revision, click here. One method for narrowing down your topic is called brainstorming. Have an academic advisor and/or trusted friend read it and give you pointers as well. When doing academic writing, avoid passive voice, and useactive voiceinstead. First, look at sentence structures and try to find any grammar and spelling mistakes. You can use a program likeGrammarlyor visit a local writing center if you need help. Then, read your essay aloud to hear how it sounds. Your conclusion should end with a statement or idea that leaves a strong impression and provokes further thought. Your second paragraph generally begins the body of the paper. This paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that introduces the first supporting idea . You should use the middle of the paragraph to discuss your support, give examples, and analyze the significance of these examples. Your last sentence of the body paragraph could be used to draw a conclusion for that supporting idea, or to transition into the next paragraph. The form of your Conclusion, like your introduction, is flexible. One good way to conclude a paper is to begin the last paragraph with a statement that reflects on what has been stated and proved, without repeating it exactly. Then you should briefly restate your key points to gently remind the reader how well you proved your thesis. An active voice is more engaging and tells the reader exactly who your subject is, what he, she or they are doing. The strongest points suppporting your thesis statement will go in the second paragraph, and the second strongest will go in the third. For the concluding paragraph and sentence, you should restate your thesis, summarize what the audience just read and include information that signifies the end of the essay. If crafting a good essay isn’t your strong suit, you’re going to struggle with acing your test or paper. With a few essay writing tips, you can turn in an effective essay that will wow your teacher and get you the grade you deserve. The Best Regime - Literature Essay Samples

What is the best regime? Building from his discussion of happiness, virtue, and the good life in Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle answers this question elaborately in his later text, The Politics. In his elaboration, Aristotle investigates numerous regimes, looking particularly at what claims bring them about and what eventually leads to their downfall. Nonetheless, Aristotles analysis is consistent with his work in The Ethics, and so the highest focus, or aim, remains virtue. Unfortunately, a regime with such a pure focus has never existed; instead it has been stymied by factional conflicts among those who make up the city, and the differing views of justice and inequality that result. Thus Aristotles answer is twofold: his immediate answer points to those regimes that focus on virtue foremost; at a more practical level, however, he identifies the best regime as one that acknowledges other focuses, such as on wealth and freedom, in addition to the highest focus on virtue. This la tter regime is still an aspiration though, and in fact Aristotle admits that it occurs only infrequently. To help realize the best regime in practice then, Aristotle also discusses by what means it may come into being, as well as what aids the rulers have in maintaining its existence.Aristotle begins his work in The Politics by looking at the city, and specifically how, as well as for what purposes, it is formed. Based on what he sees as a natural and human impulse towards some sort of sustaining and reproductive partnership, Aristotle notes that all cities, while coming into being for the sake of living, (exist) for the sake of living well (Lord, 37). Living well then, both individually and communally, requires a life in accordance with virtue since the best way of life both separately for each individual and in common for cities is that accompanied by virtue (198). Happiness will then be the result of such a virtuous life for the city according to Aristotle, as he further argu es, If anyone accepts that the individual [is happy] on account of virtue, he will also assert that the more excellent city is the one that is happier (199). Aristotle sums up the importance of virtue, writing, It is thus evident that virtue must be a care for every city, especially since living well is the end of the city (98, 99).Not all regimes, unfortunately, care for virtue as Aristotle stresses that they should. Instead there are regimes that care alternatively for wealth, and others for freedom. In addition, there are correct and deviant forms of each of these regimes that Aristotle outlines. Most generally, Aristotle outlines six regime types, three of which are correct regimes which look to the common advantage, and three of which are their deviations, instead looking only to the advantage of the rulers (95). Aristotle then identifies kingship as the most correct regime above aristocracy and polity since kingship is a regime ruled by only one, and it becomes less likel y for all to be outstanding in virtue when the regime is ruled by the many. Democracy, which is the deviant form of polity, then follows polity in preference and is followed in turn by oligarchy, which focuses on wealth, and finally tyranny, which is the deviation from kingship.Considering these possibilities, as well as their aims, it begins to become apparent as to which regimes are the best according to Aristotle. Based on his claim that virtue must be a care of every city, and that virtue can meet no upper limit in an individual, kingship and aristocracy then appear to be Aristotles top choice as such regimes would be ruled by the one or the few with nearly deific virtue. There are, nonetheless, arguments against the seeming excellence of these regimes such as that a kingship would not facilitate ruling and being ruled, nor would it allow citizens to participate in politics as part of their leisure and these eventually point more towards aristocracy as a better regime. Ari stocracy has its own faults though, such as that the poor and the many often confuse it with oligarchy. It does, however, allow ruling and being ruled, especially if it contains a select group of citizens. What becomes most clear regarding the best theoretical regime, however, is that there are many factors that must be considered when matching a city with its best regime, and these factors become increasingly visible when addressing the best practical regime.Regimes such as kingship and aristocracy therefore, where the few or even the single-most virtuously elite rule, are nearly impossible in practice. What makes this an impossibility, according to Aristotle, is the perpetual occurrence of factional conflicts that arise due to competing claims of which inequality will determine the ruler. That is, while some claim that virtue should determine the rulers, others claim that it should be wealth, and still others freedom (130). Not surprisingly, such differing claims within the same city and regime can be detrimental, and eventually cause the demise of the regime. Aristotle thus notes that all those who dispute about regimes speak of some part of justice, which in turn is a debate around equality and inequality (99). Thus, whereas justice is held to be equality, and it is, but for equals and not for all, inequality is held to be just and is indeed, but for unequals and not for all (97). These factional conflicts then manifest themselves in alternative claims to power, which are in turn alternative views on justice, or what is equal and unequal within the regime. A common factional conflict then might result from individuals thinking that, if they are unequal in a certain thing, such as goods, they are (also) unequal generally, while the others suppose that if they are equal in a certain thing, such as freedom, they are equal generally (98). Thus because justice is held by all to be a certain equality, the factions that result always reflect this vari ation in interpreting equality that occurs between the few and the many, or the poor and the rich (103, emphasis added).Considering this tendency towards factional conflicts, as well as other variations, such as in population and climate, that distinguish each city from the next, Aristotle acknowledges that the best regime for one city may not be the best for all others. Noting this resulting diversity in regimes, Aristotle writes, So the varieties of the regimes how many there are and in how many ways they are combined should not be overlooked (119). In addition to this variety stemming from the diversity of circumstances that makes every city unique, Aristotle also points out that the best city is perhaps just an ideal, or what one would pray for above all, with external things providing no impediment, and thus there is a second range of regimes that the city must choose from (118). In this second range, it is then most practical for the city to choose the regime that is [the best] possible and not only the one that is at the peak and requires much equipment (119). Driving this aspiration for the best regime, as Aristotle recalls, is the search for the best life possible, and with the most happiness and thus virtue. Aristotle concludes, For it is through hunting for this in a different manner and by means of different things that [groups of] individuals create ways of life and regimes that differ (209).At this point the rulers task seems insurmountable as they must both select and enact a regime that molds best to their city. The rulers, however, are not alone in this task, and in fact Aristotle lists several aids that can help them theorize and implement the best regime. Among these aids are, the application of laws, the aid of citizens, the expansion of a middling element, or essentially a middle class, and finally, education.First, a ruler may use laws to counteract the passions and appetites of those who will participate in the regime. Aristo tle discusses this benefit of laws, noting that it may be bad for the authoritative element generally to be man instead of lawŠif he has the passions that result [from being human] in his soul (100). Similarly, Desire is a thing of this sort; and spiritedness perverts rulers and the best men. Hence law is intellect without appetite (114). Law can also be useful in cities where persons (are) similar by nature, and thus equal in many respects, including matters of honor and virtue. Here, as Aristotle argues, it is no more just [for equal persons] to rule than to be ruled, and it is therefore just [that they rule and be ruled] by turns. But this is already law, for the arrangement [of ruling and being ruled] is law (113). Although law may then play a beneficiary role in the rulers task, it also has its shortcomings as specific laws cannot be written for every circumstance nor can they enforce themselves without human guardians. Thus Aristotle notes that individuals must be e stablished as law-guardians and as servants of the law, or essentially to serve as judges.A second aid of the ruler or rulers may be a carefully defined citizenry that will include those interested in serving the regime, and exclude those who are incapable of participating in government due to natural slavish characteristics or a lack of leisure time. Primarily, as Aristotle notes, although citizens are dissimilar, preservation of the partnership is their task, and the regime is [this] partnership (90). Also, as with laws, a citizen in the common sense is one who shares in ruling and being ruled, since this is according to his virtue (106). A citizen, though, is not everyone who is not a ruler, and Aristotle reinforces this distinction since farmers, for example, would be incapable of fulfilling the duties of proper citizens. One notable absence in the farmers life is then leisure time, or time both with a view to the creation of virtue and with a view to political activities (2 11). Nonetheless, citizens properly defined can be a significant aid to the rulers of the regimes since they tend towards ruling and being ruled, while also having the time to cultivate their virtue and political involvement.A third aid, or perhaps strategy, that the ruler may employ is to increase the middling element, for this dispels the factional conflicts that result from inequality (164). The middling element accomplishes this in part by mediating reasonably between the extremes to either end, but also by avoiding the passions and desires of these extremes which often lead to their own demise. Thus, in the deviant regimes, where the middling element is often neglected, it is common to see the regime overrun by its own emphasis, such as in a democracy for example, where many of the things that are held to be characteristically popular (eventually) overturn democracies (166). The middling element also often represents the mean between competing claims, such as those betwee n the rulers and the ruled. Thus it is the middling element that knows how to rule and be ruled, as well as how to avoid the tendency to become arrogant and base on a grand scale, (or alternatively) malicious and base in petty ways (134). As Aristotle therefore concludes, it is the greatest good fortune for those who are engaged in politics to have a middling and sufficient property since this element will most often yield the most stable regimes (135, 149).The fourth aid for the ruler, and perhaps the most useful in preserving the regime according to Aristotle, is education. There are several aims of such education, though chiefly it is aimed at preparing non-laborers and non-slaves for lives spent partly in leisure. Thus education for vulgar tasks is to be avoided since such acts are those that bring the body into a worse state and wage-earning sorts of work, for they make the mind a thing abject and lacking in leisure (230). Thus, since leisure is a time for cultivating vir tue, among other things, education should primarily be aimed at preparing the young for such activity. Essentially (then), according to Aristotle, there are four things they customarily educate in: letters, gymnastics, music, and fourth, some in expertise in drawing (230). Before defining education in such a manner, however, Aristotle makes an important distinction between education that is of the sort that I have just described, and education that he characterizes as relative to the regime. As he describes, But to be educated relative to the regime is not to do the things that oligarchs or those who want democracy enjoy, but rather the things by which the former will be able to run an oligarchy and the latter to have a regime that is run democratically (167). There must them be some sort of moderation that is emphasized in education so that no longer do the sons of the rulers live luxuriously, while those of the poor undergo exercise and exertion, since this is often what has l ead to revolution (167). Education must then also emphasize this moderation towards the middle of two extremes.Upon consideration of these four advantages of the ruler, as well as the existence and causes of the factional conflicts that all regimes tend to face, Aristotles work suggests that polity seems to be the best regime in a practical sense. Granted, it is not a kingship the most correct regime nor even an aristocracy which, like kingships, focuses on virtue as opposed to wealth or freedom. Further, polity isnt really even its own regime, having its own unique essence; instead it is a mixture of oligarchy and democracy (130). Aristotle extends this definition of polity as a mixture by identifying the three things disputing over equality in the regime, freedom, wealth, and virtue, and noting that polity is a mixture of the two of the well off and the poor (130-1).But what is the advantage of such mixture, and thus what makes polity a best regime? Aristotle would surely respond, in parallel with his work in The Ethics, that just as virtue is itself a mean as well as the highest aim polity, as a mixture, and essentially a mean between the dividing claims of the oligarchs and the democrats, also follows this pattern and is thus choice-worthy. In many ways then, the advantages of polity can be seen in the advantages of the middling element that Aristotle identifies since, if it was correctly said in the [discourses of] ethics that the happy life is one in accordance with virtue and unimpeded, and that virtue is a mean, then the middling sort of life is best the mean that is capable of being obtained by each sort of individual (133). This characteristic of polity becomes especially present as Aristotle discusses how a polity comes into being. As Aristotle notes, there are three defining principles of this combination or mixture, which are: first, by taking elements of the legislation of each regime; second, by taking the mean between the assessme nts; and third, by taking some from the oligarchic law and some from the democratic (131). Polity, defined as a mean between oligarchy and democracy, thus becomes more apparent in each of these three mixture types since the mean too is of this sort: each of the extremes is revealed in (the mixture) (132).In concluding, however, it becomes increasingly apparent that, noticeably absent in this definition of polity as the most practical regime, is the almost pure pursuit of virtue that exists in theoretical kingships and aristocracies. This certainly goes uncontested, as virtue does not take the defining role in a polity as it does in the other two correct regimes. In a certain sense, however, such is reality: the competing claims of inequality of the poor, the rich, the virtuous, and the numerous to name a few, are what primarily prevent cities from achieving the best and most correct regimes. But a polity is not void of virtue by any means, and in fact polity is arguably defined in the same manner as is virtue as a mean, and so it takes on a virtuous quality in this sense. Further, Aristotle would surely hope that the citizens of such a polity would engage both political activities as well as the cultivation of their own virtue and this could certainly be achieved in a polity where leisure time was available.

The Mysterious Tunguska Explosion of 1908

At 7:14 a.m. on June 30, 1908, a giant explosion shook central Siberia. Witnesses close to the event described seeing a fireball in the sky, as bright and hot as another sun. Millions of trees fell and the ground shook. Although a number of scientists investigated, it is still a mystery as to what caused the explosion. The Blast The explosion is estimated to have created the effects of a magnitude 5.0 earthquake, causing buildings to shake, windows to break, and people to be knocked off their feet even at 40 miles away. The blast, centered in a desolate and forested area near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia, is estimated to have been a thousand times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The explosion leveled an estimated 80 million trees over an 830 square-mile area in a radial pattern from the blast zone. Dust from the explosion hovered over Europe, reflecting light that was bright enough for Londoners to read at night by it. While many animals were killed in the blast, including hundreds of local reindeer, it is believed that no humans lost their lives in the blast.   Examining the Blast Area The blast zones remote location and the intrusion of worldly affairs (World War I and the Russian Revolution) meant that it wasnt until 1927 -- 19 years after the event -- that the first scientific expedition was able to examine the blast area. Assuming that the blast had been caused by a falling meteor, the expedition expected to find a huge crater as well as pieces of the meteorite. They found neither. Later expeditions were also unable to find credible evidence to prove the blast was caused by a falling meteor. Cause Of the Explosion In the decades since this huge explosion, scientists and others have attempted to explain the cause of the mysterious Tunguska Event. The most commonly accepted scientific explanation is that either a meteor or a comet entered the Earths atmosphere and exploded a couple of miles above the ground (this explains the lack of impact crater). To cause such a large blast, some scientists determined that the meteor would have weighed around 220 million pounds (110,000 tons) and traveled approximately 33,500 miles per hour before disintegrating. Other scientists say that the meteor would have been much larger, while still others say much smaller. Additional explanations have ranged from the possible to the ludicrous, including a natural gas leak escaped from the ground and exploded, a UFO spaceship crashed, the effects of a meteor destroyed by a UFOs laser in an attempt to save Earth, a black hole that touched Earth, and an explosion caused by scientific tests done by Nikola Tesla. Still a Mystery Over a hundred years later, the Tunguska Event remains a mystery and its causes continue to be debated. The possibility that the blast was caused by a comet or meteor entering the Earths atmosphere creates additional worry. If one meteor could cause this much damage, then there is a serious possibility that in the future, a similar meteor could enter Earths atmosphere and rather than landing in remote Siberia, land on a populated area. The result would be catastrophic.

In addition to retail sales through restaurants, almost all small and large grocery stores carry packaged tea as one of their main products. There are, however, speciality tea shops in key areas that sell a large variety of loose tea. The price of tea per kg increased by 43% to PKR408 in 2009. Black standard tea bags suffered the highest price increases in 2009, jumping by 46%. Tea prices increased on a global scale in 2009, as a result of poor harvests in Kenya, Sri Lanka and India, while the situation was exacerbated in Pakistan due to its rupee losing value against the US dollar. People often take it for granted how significant it is when someone lets them into his or her strange little world. They take for granted how much courage it takes to be completely open and transparent. That’s the toughest thing about writing to me. I have been writing and creating stories since before I even knew how to write. Before I had been taught what all these letters really mean, what all these symbols infer, I would have my mom write down journal entries as I recited them in my squeaky, toddler English. When I did learn how to read and write, I would spend hours of my free time writing stories, filling pages with whatever was in my head. I wrote about heroes and dragons and maidens. I wrote about strength and fate and love. Later I wrote about the world, about the beautiful and the ugly, and the thin line that separates them. We will write a custom essay sample on Maverick or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While I loved telling stories, there was always something that scared me about it: criticism. The thing that hurt most when someone criticized my work was that they don’t always realize how much of myself I put in to it. It can really mess you up inside when a critic hates your work, or even if they just pass it off as forgettable. A critic doesn’t always realize that even if the story is straight out of Wonderland, that’s me on the paper. Those emotions brought to life by vivid characters started out inside of me. They grew and grew until the only thing left was to write about them. Sometimes I would want to yell at a negative critic, â€Å"That’s my dream you’re talking about! That’s me,† but I never did. For a while this really twisted my guts. I didn’t know how to write for myself, whilst retaining the approval of my audience. During this time I found that I was dissatisfied with my work, but was still too scared to give my self up to the critics. It was easier just to be numb to it all. Last year I attended the New England Young Writer’s Conference at the Breadloaf campus in Middlebury, Vermont. I knew that it was going to be a bunch of writers there who would have shared my struggle, so I decided to bring some of my more personal pieces to be workshopped. As soon as I got there I was having a great time connecting with a lot of unique people, but I still felt reserved. During my second day there, the author under whom I was studying, Rone Shavers, said something that lit a fire inside of me. He said, â€Å"When faced with negative feedback for following your dreams say, thank you, but think screw you. That night I mustered up the courage to read some of my fiction aloud at an open mic. Well, I told them it was fiction but iwas more like a memoir. Once more, I had ventured to put my heart on the page and now I stood before an open mic that might as well have been the mouth of a lion’s den. I began to read and tried to have a strong voice. My whole bo dy was shaking. When I had finished, I looked up and everyone was clapping. I knew some were just being polite, but it appeared as thought they had genuinely enjoyed it. I felt like a king. I realized that telling my stories wasn’t about feeding back to people what I thought they might like. Anyone can regurgitate standard mediocrity with the forced appeal of a piped-in laugh track. I realized that to write, not for the approval of others, but for the simple sake of creating something special, I had spill my guts out. I had to divulge my secrets and hope that maybe even if some people didn’t approve of them, someone else might be able to connect to them. So rather than write for the approval of others I wrote for their enlightenment or entertainment. In doing so I accepted the risks: the heat of failure, defeat, and humiliation. I realized, however, that the only way to be true to myself, in the hope that somebody else might connect to my work, I would have to do whate ver it takes to pour forth my very life and the ideals that make it mine. I would have to have the courage to let them into my strange little world.

Law Code of Hammurabi free essay sample

Throughout the history of civilization there has been a need for order amongst societies. This order has been seen in the ruling of kings and the laws they created. Most of these laws were set into motion on the basis of whatever the king said is what happened. With the Code of Hammurabi there is a written law that was portrayed as something that not even the king could change. The purpose of this paper is to give a general background of ancient Babylon during the reign of Hammurabi, present the background of the Code of Hammurabi, and discuss the medium and manner in which it was presented. Hammurabi was the sixth king in the old Babylonian period. He became king in 1792 B. C. while still a young man. During his rule he spent time on many traditional aspects such as building and restoring temples, building city walls, and building canals. We will write a custom essay sample on Law Code of Hammurabi or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However, many accounts note Hammurabi as being the king to unite Mesopotamia under the rule of the Babylonian Empire. Hammurabi did this through a series of military and diplomatic alliances, as well as, through series military conquests. He had an organized and well-disciplined military. This allowed him to greatly extend his original empire in every direction. Despite the many wars and military conquest Hammurabi brought peace and prosperity into Mesopotamia. He was also thought to be concerned with being a just ruler and was viewed as a â€Å"guarantee of justice† (Ascalone, 114). The unification of the empire under Hammurabi led to increased trade with the Persians which ultimately led to more wealth being acquired. It also led to the incorporation new deities such as Shamash, Ishtar, and Adad. Shamash especially became important during Hammurabi’s rule. Shamash initially was the sun king and later also became known as the â€Å"guarantor of equity and social justice† (Ascalone, 136). Hammurabi was unique in comparison to the rulers before him in that he did not deify himself. Instead he chose to think of himself as being a â€Å"favorite of the gods† or as being a chosen one of the gods (Martell, 22). Hammurabi was the first of the Mesopotamian rulers to view himself as separate from the gods in this manner. This gave him a position of leadership that was simply to enforce and interpret the will of the gods. This also set a precedent for rulers in later times. The expanded territory and unification meant there was more people and land that had to have order maintained. This led to the item that Hammurabi is most famous for, his code of law. Hammurabi was said to have received these laws from Shamash. Many of the laws created were based specifically on the growing culture. Though Hammurabi’s code of law was not the first known law code in ancient Mesopotamia, it is the most complete still in existence today. The official code of Hammurabi contained 242 laws in all. These laws were carved in relief into a basalt or granite pillar called a stele that stood seven and half feet tall. The laws were carved into the stele in 1760 B. C. The written laws took up the majority of the pillar and were separated into 49 columns. At the top of the pillar there is a scene depicting Hammurabi receiving the laws from Shamash. Hammurabi is standing before Shamash. Shamash is seated and holding a ring and a staff. Shamash can be identified by the flames or rays of the sun rising from his shoulders (Chrisp, 25). This depiction is thought to indicate that the king was making the laws on the gods behalf. The written law itself is written using cuneiform in the Akkadian language. The Akkadian language is believed to be the common language of this time, whereas Sumerian was the official language. In writing the law code in the common speech Hammurabi had hopes of making the law more accessible and understandable to the common people. There is some disagreement about where it is thought that Hammurabi erected the pillar. Some believe that it was erected in the Temple of Marduk in Babylon. Others believe that it was erected in Sippal as a monument to Shamash. One thing that scholars and researchers seem to agree on is that the pillar was moved to Susa as spoils when the Elamites attacked Babylon in 1165 B. C. It was in Susa that it was discovered in 1901 by French archeologist Jean-Vincent Scheil. When Scheil discovered the stele it was in 3 pieces. He reassembled the pieces and spent 6 months translating the text. The stele currently resides in the Louvre Mueseum. The text was organized into three main parts. It begins with description of Hammurabi receiving the laws from the sun king, Shamash. Hammurabi describes the event as he was given the responsibility â€Å"to make justice appear in the land, to destroy the evil and the wicked that the strong might not oppress the weak, to rise like the sun-god†¦to give light to the land† (Schomp, 14). He also presents himself as being â€Å"the protector of the weak and oppressed† (Iselin). This prologue was followed by the actual laws. The laws were written in simplified terms as well as the common language as it was important to Hammurabi that everyone understood them. The laws were organized into chapters or sections and covered every aspect of their life. All the written laws followed the same format in that a problem or issue is stated followed by a response in the future tense that described the punishment of the guilty party or the solution to the issue (Iselin). The laws were often harsh but recognized the difference between accidental injury or harm and intent. The penalties also varied depending on the status of the offender. The laws themselves governed economic provisions, family law, criminal law, and civil law. The laws were written specifically so they could be integrated into everyday life. There were laws governing slaves, for example. One law stated that any slave that struck a free citizen would have his ear cut off. Another stated that any citizen that stole a slave or was caught hiding a runaway slave would be put to death. One interesting law stated that if a barber cut off the â€Å"abbuttu,† the topknot of hair distinctive to slaves, without the knowledge and permission of the slaves master would have his hands cut off (Schomp, 63). Other laws included the punishments for robbery and arson, as well as how property should be distributed, and how contracts should be handled. Many of the laws were very exact when it came to the punishment. One example of this is found in a law discussing a death from shoddy building; â€Å"If a builder has constructed a house†¦with the result that the house he built collapses and so caused the death of the owner, the builder shall be put to death. If it has caused the death of the son of the owner of the house, they shall put to death the son of the builder† (Service, 71) Another example of this exact punishment is seen in the well-known law of â€Å"if a man puts out the eye of a man, they shall put out his eye† (Service, 71). This eye for and eye concept is what is known as the lex talionis (latin for â€Å"law of retaliation†). The lex talionis was utilized by many different cultures and survived into the modern world in the form of the death penalty for murder. The laws written by Hammurabi didn’t just include penalties but also items such as appropriate fees to charge in different professions. One example of this is seen when a doctors fees are discussed. A doctor who treated â€Å"the broken bone or diseased soft part† was to charge 5 shekels for upper-class citizens, 3 shekels for commoners, and 2 shekels to the master of a slave being treated (Shomp, 68). Stating the fees for certain services likes this protected people from being taken advantage by merchants or tradesmen. After the laws are listed, is the final section or the epilogue. In the epilogue Hammurabi reiterates that the laws were given at the direction of the sun-god Shamesh. Hammurabi also indicates that he recorded the laws in order for them to be an example for later rulers. He states, â€Å"To the end of days, forever, may the king who happens to be in the land observe the words of justice which I have inscribed on my stele†¦let the stele reveal to him the accustomed way, the way to follow, the land’s judgments which I have judged† (Chrisp, 25). This is extremely interesting considering that’s exactly what they turned out to be. The Code of Hammurabi is extremely important in that it became a model after which many systems of law were founded since then. It became something that other cultures could learn from and model themselves after. It also represented a new style of ruling, in which not only were the common people bound to laws but so was the king, as he did not create them. The stele and the style it was written in also gave huge amount of insight into the culture, religious beliefs, daily activities, and economics that were present during this time in the Babylonian Empire. The precedent that Hammurabi set when he created his law code is an important aspect of history that carried into the modern day. There was a written law that was portrayed as something handed down by the gods and that even the king had to obey to some extent. The background of Hammurabi’s stele and the detail the text portrays about Babylonian society will continue to be extremely interesting and important when looking at ancient Babylon.

A Tale Of Two Cities Essays (470 words) - Literature, Free Essays

A Tale Of Two Cities Essays (470 words) - Literature, Free Essays A Tale of Two Cities A Tale of Two Cities has long been one of Charles Dickens' most favored books. This book opens in the year 1775 by contrasting two cities: Paris, France and London, England. Throughout this story various characters are "recalled to life", meaning that they have had a new chance at life. Dr. Manette is clearly mad after being in prison for eighteen years. When Lucie, the Dr.'s daughter, and Mr. Lorry eventually nurse the doctor back to a healthy state and out of his insane state they had "recalled him to life." Dr. Manette was nursed from an insane state with no real life to a sane one with a very functional life. In doing this Lucie and Mr. Lorry, in a way, gave Dr. Manette's life back to him or "recalled him to life." Another instance in which someone is "recalled to life" involves Charles Darnay. Charles Darnay is on trial for treason in England(Book 2, Ch.2-4). C.J Stryver and Sydney Carton are representing Darnay in this trial. Sydney Carton saves Darnay from death in this trial with his miraculous wits. Through this Darnay is given another chance at life ,and therefore was "recalled to life." The last and most significant instance of someone being "recalled to life" is found in the last chapters of this book. Sydney Carton has recently switched places with his look alike, Darnay, and is awaiting the guillotine. While Sydney awaits his death he thinks, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, then I have ever done, it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." Through these words Sydney recognizes that by sacrificing his life for Darnay, a loved one of Lucie, he will be doing the best thing that he has ever done and can do. Sydney is finally satisfied with himself, he is no longer a drunken fool, but a hero that now can live or die with himself. By dying, and saving Darnay for Lucie, Sydney Carton is "recalled to life." Throughout this book "recalled to life" has been the most important theme. Almost all of the main characters in this novel were "recalled to life." This theme was the most important because it allowed us, the readers, to see the characters trates being used by them and to understand how much a character would do for another. When Carton represented Darnay on trial and saved his life we saw how smart Carton was. In the last instance of "recalled to life" we saw how much Carton really felt for Lucie when he saved Lucie's husbands life in return for his own. The theme "recalled to life" is seen throughout this novel and should be recognized as one of the most important.

Nursing education System Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Nursing education System - Assignment Example The theoretical part of nursing education introduces nurse students to the healthcare environment and what their duties and responsibilities as nurses. When it comes to practical training, the objective is to equip nurses with hands-on skills and experience that allow them to execute the required duties and responsibilities. In this respect, nursing is a critical component of the health system infrastructure. The bid to enhance healthcare system is subject to the influence of many different factors. Successful health systems capitalize on the availability of human resources, which in this case include all healthcare practitioners. This makes nurses a critical part of the success story therein. In enhancing health system infrastructure, one of the primary goals is to ensure that nurse-patient ratio remains favorable to the welfare of the general population. What this means is that nursing is just as important as any other healthcare aspect. The requirements of entry into nursing practice vary from one country to another. In the United States, nursing education and practice entry programs are divided into four levels, namely: hospital-based diploma, associate degree at hospital-based level or at community college level, bachelor’s degree, and master’s degree or higher (Shulman, 2009). The first three levels are mostly common as entry point requirements while the last one is relatively less common. States play a major role in regulating nursing in the United States. Every State has its own approaches and mechanisms of regulating nursing practices. Amid state-level regulation, the American Nurses Association plays a fundamental role in the healthcare setting. This association works with state governments in matters of funding, continued competence, and nursing education advancement (Hawkins, 2011). The primary goal of nursing regulation is to ensure that nurses are not only responsible and accountable, but

Argumentative Research Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Argumentative Research - Essay Example They include harsh treatment of the minor offences, engaging the offender’s family, and failure to protect the innocent. The sex laws in America are unjust. Small and large offences are treated the same way, which is not fair. For example teenagers who engage in sex, they are legally allowed to be punishable by law. In addition, those sharing revealing photos get the same punishment with those who have committed the rape offence. The law puts their names in their registry (The Economist, 2009). The teenagers do not have the knowledge about the sex laws but they undergo the same treatment as if they were acquitted with the law. It is not fair to treat the cases the same. In the end, this ruins their lives and this is an issue per se to punish and publish their names in the registry of sex offenders. The American sex law punishes both the offender and their families. Not anyone with the offence is allowed to interact with other people directly. An example is a man who once slept with their girlfriend is not allowed to take his children to the playground or any public place (The Economist, 2009). The children are likely to suffer because of the offence committed by their dad thirty or so years ago. Notably, this is an unfair treatment of the innocent children. In addition, restraining the sex offenders from finding a job a home makes likely to reoffend. The police are not able to identify and trace the dangerous offences due to the registration of pretty offenders. Some of the serious offenders go unrealized and un-convicted. It is unfair because, those with mere cases get severe punishment and leaving those with serious offences (The Economist, 2009). It is hard to get the most dangerous offenders due to the large number of offenders. They operate under very tight budget to sustain the huge and swelling sex-offenders. The law is unfair and it makes it difficult to re-design America’s sex laws. The state must take a hand in assessing each of the
